The Story of:
Joshua Mahinanda Kangere
Joshua Mahinanda Kangere is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo. He arrived in the United States shortly before President Trump implementing immigration laws. Before coming to the United States he was a nurse. Now he is a dishwasher at a restaurant making $10 an hour. He views his situation as an opportunity to build his life to become a nurse again and most importantly bring his family to America.
Kangere says that "American's are organized and helps him to be hard-working. Given the opportunity to work his current job made his life easier" (Wall Street Journal, 2017). To increase his inclusion in America, he is taking English and employment courses.
Based on this interview, in order to help refugees in the workforce, companies need to make refugee employees feel welcomed, be understanding, accommodate, and grant refugees access to resources to continue to learn and adjust to being in a new country. Kangere's boss, Jennifer Balin, sent him an uber because there was confusion about what time Kangere started work.
